5 Signs You Have Found A Good Voice Teacher

Suddenly your mind starts racing.

What song should I sing? What if my voice cracks? What if I forget the words? What if I'm not good enough?

Before long, you decide you need a voice teacher.

So you hop online, ask around for recommendations, and quickly discover that the most popular teacher in town is booked solid—and probably costs more than your family budget can comfortably handle.

Before you start reaching out to teachers, let's look at five basic indicators that someone is likely to be a good fit.

1. They Have Real Performance Experience

A teaching certificate or fancy vocal method doesn't automatically make someone a great teacher.

One of the first things I look for is whether a teacher has experience performing, auditioning, and navigating the challenges singers actually face. Teachers who have been through auditions themselves often have valuable insight that extends beyond vocal technique.

2. Their Strengths Match Your Goals

Not every teacher specializes in every style.

If you're preparing for a musical theatre audition, look for someone known for musical theatre. If you're interested in classical singing, country, pop, worship, or contemporary commercial music, find someone who regularly works in those styles.

The best teacher for one singer may not be the best teacher for another.

3. They Have Relevant Training

Some incredible singers never earn a degree in vocal performance, and some excellent teachers come from diverse educational backgrounds.

That said, I would look for someone who has formal training related to the area in which you want to excel. Teachers who continue their education often have a deeper understanding of vocal technique, pedagogy, and healthy singing habits.

4. They Build Confidence Instead of Fear

A good teacher challenges students, but they don't rely on fear, shame, or constant criticism to create results.

Look for someone who is encouraging, positive, and invested in helping you grow. Students who feel supported tend to stay motivated longer and develop healthier relationships with singing.

5. Their Students Show Success

Do their students enjoy lessons?

Do they continue studying with the teacher?

Have they earned solos, performed successfully, improved their confidence, or reached personal goals?

Success looks different for every singer, but positive student outcomes are often a good indicator that a teacher is doing something right.

Bonus: They Understand the Voice as an Instrument

The best teachers don't just tell you what to do—they understand why it works.

A teacher should have a solid understanding of how the voice functions as an instrument and be able to explain concepts in ways that make sense to you.

At the end of the day, finding the right voice teacher isn't about finding the most expensive teacher or the most popular teacher. It's about finding someone who understands your goals, helps you build confidence, and gives you the tools to become the best singer you can be.
